Staff duties

The overall project will be directed by Professor Ben Cousins, director of the Programme for Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS) at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa.

 

He will provide intellectual leadership for the project, management support to the different elements and coordinate dissemination and networking in line with the user engagement strategy, and allocate 15% of his time.  Together with Professor Ian Scoones of IDS, he will oversee the cross-cutting comparative work. The country work will led in South Africa by Dr Edward Lahiff, PLAAS, in collaboration with Nkuzi Development Trust policy director Marc Wegerif, supported by Dr M. Aliber (HSRC), and two PLAAS/Nkuzi research officers/PhD candidates. The Zimbabwe work will be coordinated by Nelson Marongwe, Centre for Applied Social Sciences, University of Zimbabwe, together with Professor Ian Scoones and Dr William Wolmer of IDS, Dr Chrispen Sukume of Dept of Agricultural Economics, UZ, and a field team led by B.Z. Mavedzenge. The Namibia team will be coordinated by Dr. Wolfgang Werner of DRFN, together with Bertus Kruger, DRFN/ Northwest University, South Africa, and Daniel Motinga, executive director of the Namibian Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR). Country coordinators will allocate between 20% and 30% of time to the project and will have responsibility for overseeing country team research, networking and dissemination activities and ensuring timely outputs. IDS will provide inputs to the Zimbabwe and cross-cutting work, assist with international dissemination and host visiting fellowships and support PLAAS-hosted PhD students linked to the project. A total of 25% fte will be allocated to this project per annum by IDS.
